More than a month ago, a Seattle suburb became the epicenter of the U.S. novel coronavirus outbreak.

The first death from the virus in Washington was reported on Feb. 29. After that, state and local officials took quick action, starting by banning large events and gatherings, closing schools and encouraging employees who could to work from home. Then, on March 23, Gov. Jay Inslee issued a stay-at-home order, shutting down all nonessential businesses and banning all gatherings.

And now, public health officials have said the social distancing measures appear to be working to slow the spread of the virus. So how does the outbreak in Washington now compare to other states across the country?

As of Tuesday morning, the Washington State Department of Health reported 10,538 confirmed cases of the virus, including 516 deaths. That means 138 out of every 100,000 people in Washington have tested positive for the virus.

New York has seen far more exponential growth in the number of confirmed cases and deaths from the virus, with 202,208 positive cases, or 1,039.6 cases per 100,000 people.

Due to the availability of testing, it is likely there are more cases than are actually reported. But, to get a sense for how the outbreak in Washington compares to other states, here's a look at 10 other states with the greatest number of confirmed cases.
