In the space that Naked City Brewery used to occupy in the Greenwood neighborhood, two local families — Tom and Lisa Furey and Matt and Lauren Hipp — with experience in the Seattle beer industry are coming together to open this latest watering hole.
As head brewer, Tom Furey brings a wealth of Seattle craft beer knowledge to the table and plans to create unique and nuanced beers for Halcyon. He previously brewed at Kirkland’s Chainline Brewing Company and Seattle’s Standard Brewing. Co-Owner Matt Hipp is an owner at Broadview Taphouse, also located in Greenwood. He and his wife Lauren, and the Fureys, have history in Taiwan and Japan and plan to use their cultural backgrounds in the fabric of the business.
Halcyon will open with a large family and dog-friendly outdoor patio, with indoor seating coming “eventually,” according to a brewery news release. The patio will also feature a large mural created by local artist Stevie Shao. In an Instagram post Shao wrote, “This one is based on a folktale about the Halcyon bird nesting on the sea, which it calmed in order to lay its eggs on a floating nest.” Previously, the wall was covered in a mural by Henry whose work can also be seen at Flatstick Pub locations.

As for the beer, Halcyon plans to open with 14 taps plus cider and wine options for those non-beer drinkers. Halcyon’s beer will be on a rotation, and according to a news release “promises to never stop exploring and refining this journey through taste.”
The two families designed Halcyon as a "gathering space to build and be in community while pursuing the science and art of unique and inspiring beers," and plan to open around the end of October. However, Hipp says an exact date is still in flux.
