At least one member of the Seattle Seahawks won’t be playing football this year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Veteran guard Chance Warmack, who the team signed to a one-year deal in free agency, has taken the voluntary opt-out for the 2020 season, a source confirmed to SeattlePI Monday.
The source said that Warmack isn’t deemed high risk, suggesting the former first-round pick just wanted to play it safe amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune later reported that Warmack lost a family member to the virus, and has also had family friends hospitalized because of it.

The NFL and NFLPA came to an agreement last week that allows players to opt-out of the upcoming season in wake of the novel coronavirus. By voluntarily opting out, Warmack will receive a $150,000 salary advance and his contract will toll, meaning he’ll stay under Seahawks control through 2021.
Warmack had signed a non-guaranteed, one-year deal with Seattle worth $910,000.
Warmack, 28, was out of the league last year to get healthy. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2013 draft, Warmack was a depth addition for the Seahawks’ offensive line and was expected to compete in training camp at both guard spots.
Warmack was a backup guard for the Eagles in 2017 and 2018, a member of Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LII-winning team. He played the first four years of his career with the Titans, starting all 48 games he appeared in for Tennessee.
