Wilson, approaching Year 9, was given a 97 overall rating, behind only Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes at the quarterback position. Wilson also had the highest deep throw accuracy rating with a 96, three points higher than Mahomes.

Wilson last season threw for 4,110 yards (his first time surpassing the 4,000-yard threshold since 2016) and 31 touchdowns with a career-low five interceptions. He was an early front runner for the NFL’s MVP award in 2019 before the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson — third in quarterback rating behind Mahomes and Wilson — ran away with the honor.

The 31-year-old Wilson has yet to receive an MVP vote in his decorated career — something that has baffled many NFL observers — but he remains on the short list of best quarterbacks in the NFL.

Wilson’s Madden 21 rating reaffirmed that belief. And NFL coaches, scouts, executives and players surveyed for an ESPN story published last week also voted that Wilson is football’s second best quarterback behind Mahomes.

“Russell is at the best of his game that he’s ever been,” Carroll explained to 710 ESPN Seattle’s John Clayton last Friday. “His command, his control, his understanding. Everything we put forth for him allows him to be at the best I think he’s ever been. And in that, we want him to have more opportunities to be in the game and to control the game.”

Madden 21’s top 10 quarterbacks, in descending order: Mahomes (99), Wilson (97), Jackson (94), the Saints’ Drew Brees (93), Bucs’ Tom Brady (90), Packers’ Aaron Rodgers (89), Falcons’ Matt Ryan (87), Texans’ Deshaun Watson (86), Cowboys’ Dak Prescott (84), and the Eagles’ Carson Wentz (84).

Wilson was rated sixth among quarterbacks in Madden at the start of last year with a rating of 91.
