From conversation hearts to boxes of chocolate: Most popular Valentine's Day candy by state

Valentine's Day is all about love and romance and spending money on everything sweet tied up with cute little bows.

On average, 58 million pounds of chocolate are bought during Valentine’s Day week, with children receiving 39% of all Valentine’s Day candy and gifts.

And this year is no different.

The National Retail Federation is forecasting that, after a strong winter holiday season, Valentine’s Day spending will be strong as well. In fact, they predict it will smash last year’s record by 32%.

Candystore.com, an online bulk candy store, used data from the past 12 years to determine the most popular Valentine’s Day candy for each state. Not surprisingly, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, which reigned in 2019, were once again a top pick for the romantic holiday along with conversation hearts, Hershey's Kisses and M&Ms.

But if you live in Washington, don't even think about giving Hershey's Kisses or M&Ms to your sweetie this Valentine's Day.

According to the study, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are the preferred Valentine's Day treat for the Evergreen State followed by chocolate roses and conversation hearts.
