Important update on steep discounted fares

It was big news last fall when most major airline carriers announced the elimination of change fees. While change fees are no longer applied to regular main and premium cabins, airlines have gradually been reintroducing stricter policies on the steeply discounted fares, like Alaska’s Saver and Delta’s Basic Economy.

With Delta Airlines, Basic Economy tickets purchased after April 30, 2021 are non-refundable and non-changeable. The same applies to Alaska saver fares purchased after April 30, as changes, “including same-day confirmed changes are not permitted with Saver fares.” Hawaiian Airlines also discontinues the full travel waiver for all tickets on April 30, so Main Cabin Basic tickets will no longer be included in the fee-free change category.

To ensure the greatest flexibility in booking airfare, passengers are advised to skip the low price lure of lower priced no-frills saver fares and opt for Main Cabin and up, which continue to come with enhanced flexibility in changes or cancellations.
