University of Washington named 8th best university in the world

Excellence in subjects like infectious diseases and immunology propelled the school to the top

Husky students and alumni have a reason to be extra proud of their alma mater today: the University of Washington was just ranked 8th in U.S. News and World Report's Best Global University's rankings for 2021.

The prestigious annual rankings analyze 1,500 institutions spread across 81 countries to calculate the results.

The move to 8th means UW moved up two spots from last year's position at 10th. In terms of public institutions in the U.S., UW held on to its spot at number 2.

The college also landed in the top ten in several major subject areas, many of which related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
