Bird, 40, has been a free agent. Free agents can officially sign contracts with teams starting Monday, per WNBA rules, but Bird will not ink her new deal with Seattle until the team’s salary cap situation is resolved, according to ESPN.

One of the most decorated players in WNBA history, Bird has spent her entire career with the Storm, winning four league championships in 17 seasons. She’s the WNBA’s all-time leader in assists and fourth in steals.

Bird, the No. 1 overall in the 2002 WNBA draft, is an 11-time All Star. She’s won four Olympic gold medals with Team USA.

While Bird is (reportedly) staying put, another key contributor is leaving. Starting forward Alysha Clark, one of the WNBA's best defenders and three-point shooters, has signed with the Washington Mystics in free agency.

Clark, 33, had spent her entire WNBA playing career with the Storm (2012-20) after being a second-round pick by the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2010. In nine seasons with Seattle, Clark averaged 6.9 points — on 50% shooting, including 39.8% from 3 — 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 273 regular-season games.

Helping the Storm to two of their four titles in her tenure in Seattle, Clark in 2020 was a unanimous first-team All-Defense selection and led the WNBA in 3-point field goal percentage at 52.2%. She averaged career highs in points, assists and steals during the regular season.
