Seattle Dragons' inaugural 2020 season shut down due to COVID-19

The Seattle Dragons’ inaugural season has been cut short as the XFL announced Thursday that it’s discontinuing games for 2020 in wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

A league statement said that all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the year, and season-ticket holders will be issued refunds or credit toward future games.

The start-up XFL is “committed” to playing a full season in 2021 and beyond, the statement read.

“Currently, the XFL will not be playing its regular season games,” the press release said. “The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years.”

The Dragons consistently drew great support for their home games at CenturyLink Field, attracting the highest attendance numbers of the league’s teams. They entered Sunday’s game against the LA Wildcats with a 1-4 record.

The XFL has followed suit with the majority of the country’s professional and college sports leagues, who’ve been postponing and canceling events the last couple days amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
