The University Bridge has been stuck open since Friday due to mechanical issues, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).

An SDOT blog post on Saturday said that crews are working diligently to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure. The post said the issue has resulted in a failed transformer and “other electrical complications.” And while SDOT expected the bridge to be operational again by Saturday evening, a more recent tweet said that it’s unlikely to be solved until at least Sunday.

With two large events happening in Seattle on Saturday, SDOT is recommending other modes of transportation. Husky fans can get to the football game against the Sun Devils using Sound Transit Link light rail services, which delivers gamegoers right to Husky Stadium. For hockey fans heading to the Kraken game at Climate Pledge Arena, all ticket holders can ride city transit for free using the Kraken + Climate Pledge mobile app.

If you still plan on driving, take extra time to find alternate routes and expect those routes to have traffic delays.

Crews have been working to repair the bridge since it first got stuck on Friday morning. Initially, the cause was thought to be due to burnt-out fuses in the bridge’s mechanical system. Those parts were replaced, and upon completion, the bridge was still malfunctioning, signaling to crews that the issues were far more extensive.

SDOT is working with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), King County Metro and Sound Transit to help people get around the closure. King County Metro busses have been rerouted to accommodate the closure and signs have been posted throughout the area to signal drivers to take alternate routes.
