And picking the vehicle you want, saving up to buy one, then finding it, insuring it and keeping it running are all involved processes.

It should come as no surprise, then, that car owners are extending the amount of time they own their vehicles. As of 2019, the average time someone owned their car was about seven years. On average, about 7.7% of vehicle owners keep their cars for over 15 years.

But which are the vehicles Seattleites are most likely to hold onto for 15 years or longer?

Automotive research firm and car search engine iSeeCars.com analyzed the sales of over 350,000 cars with a model year between 1981-2004 sold in 2019 to determine which ones owners were most likely to keep for at least 15 years. The most popular models nationwide to be kept for over 15 years were three Toyota models: the Highlander, Sienna and Tacoma.

“Toyota trucks are known for being indestructible, so their owners likely replace them less often since they’re still able to function as haulers,” iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly said in the report. “While American automakers have abandoned smaller cars from their lineups to focus on trucks and SUVs, the proven dependability and solid reputation of these vehicles has not only kept them in production, but helped them remain popular even amid their segment’s decline.”

In Seattle, the vehicles most commonly kept for 15 years or longer were a bit different. The Toyota Tacoma didn't even make the list.

Other Toyota models did make the Seattle list, however. Notably absent from iSeeCars's list: Subaru -- particularly interesting because one Subaru did make the national Top 5.
