"That's what I'm talking about SACRAMENTO!!!!! WE DID IT!!!!!," tweeted Scramento Mayor Kevin Johnson just after 2 p.m.

"I've never been prouder of this city. I thank the ownership group, city leaders, but most of all the BEST FANS IN THE NBA!!!"

The committee of 12 NBA owners, held a teleconference about the sale of the Sacramento Kings on Monday.

Other owners will make a final decision.

The NBA confirmed that its combined relocation and finance advisory committee, composed of 12 owners, voted down the Maloof family's proposed sale of the Kings to hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who planned to move the team to Seattle.

The full Board of Governors isn't expected to vote on the Kings until around May 13, but the committee's recommendation will surely be influential. The Hansen-Ballmer group needs 23 of 30 owners' votes to get control of the team.

Hansen and Ballmer had a deal with the Maloof family, the majority owner of the Kings. The proposal was for the team to play eventually in a new area in Seattle's Sodo neighborhood.

Johnson organized a group of his own rich investors to buy the team and build it a new arena.

He had this for Seattle NBA fans on Monday:
