To curb the environmental impact of textile waste, lululemon has been expanding its nationwide trade-in system after a successful two-state pilot in 2021. As of now, all United States lululemon shoppers have the option to trade in gently used gear and buy “like new” products at discounted prices.

Guests who bring in pre-loved lululemon clothing to one of the more than 390 participating U.S. stores will receive an e-gift card which can be used to shop resale products online. Items include lululemon’s signature leggings, tops, shorts and jackets that are categorized as being in “good as new” condition.

The program reinvests 100% of profits to support lululemon’s Impact Agenda, which includes making 100% of products with sustainable materials and end-of-use solutions by 2030. The multi-year strategy aims to accelerate positive environmental change and create a circular ecosystem within the clothing industry.

Like New first debuted in May 2021 with trade-in trials executed across more than 80 stores in California and Texas. Upon receiving a positive response, the brand partnered with resale technology provider Trove to support its operations and expansion.

What’s the impact? Based on Trove calculations of average carbon footprint and waste savings, lululemon purports that “buying a pair of Wunder Unders or ABC Joggers on lululemon Like New instead of brand new can save up to 50% of the carbon footprint; and 310 grams of waste.”

Refreshed gear can be purchased through lululemon’s Like New site.
