According to a new report, sale speeds for new and used cars slowed in October, but not because the microchip shortage is ending.

iSeeCars.com, an automotive research firm, examined more than 250,000 sales of new and used vehicles across the country in October. The study found that both new and used cars were selling more than a week slower than in September. iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer attributes the slowdown to increased inventory and price increases.

“The demand for new and used cars has slowed in October, which is likely the result of increased inventory over September and because elevated car prices may have deterred consumers from buying a car until prices stabilize,” said Brauer. “Production halts and restricted inventory continue to beset the auto industry, but we did see an incremental improvement this past month.”

In September, new cars were selling in an average of 24.6 days while used models were leaving lots after an average of 32.8 days. In October, sales slowed, with new vehicles taking 31.7 days to sell and used cars taking 44.7 days.

Nationally, the fastest-selling new car in October was the Kia Seltos which took the top spot on the list for the first time after being ranked 11th in September. The Seltos was found to be selling in an average of 7.7 days.

The Honda Insight was the fastest-selling used car in the U.S. in October, selling in an average of 20.5 days.

Other new vehicles that were selling quickly across the country in October were the Toyota Highlander Hybrid (7.9 days), the Honda CR-V (9 days), and the Toyota Sienna (9.4 days).

The Kia Telluride, which has taken a high spot on the list several times, was ranked the fifth fastest-selling vehicle in October. “Demand for the often marked up Kia Telluride has outpaced supply since its 2019 launch, and its average new car price of $46,374 exceeds its MSRP of $32,190 to $44,590,” said Brauer.
